I've been reading about the history of the portrayal of the cat in art. (I recommend the book. I got it for under 10 dollars from a discount retailer at a street festival, and it's full of great images.) It's highlighted quite an ambivalence in our relationship with the species. Naturally (being the way I am), I identified a kinship between the cat and Loki -- the trickster of the Norse gods, whom Marvel has done quite a fabulous job of making en vogue right now. (I was falling in love with Loki before he had a bandwagon...Just sayin'.) I entered this piece in Mightyfine's "Marvel Villains" T-shirt design contest, but for whatever reason, it didn't pass the approval of Marvel's licensors. Maybe they thought the font license would be a problem. (I made sure it was free for commercial use.) Maybe they don't like anthropomorphisms. That wasn't against the rules...but Oh Well. Here's the piece and the T-shirt mock-up; I still enjoy it even though it'll never be printed on a T-shirt.
This is intended to be an art blog/site. I vow that every post will contain a visual piece, so feel free to call me out on that if I screw it up. The title of this blog is another reference to Opalina, that obscure, beloved angel of feline spirits. Without her, would I have drawn so many, many cats in my youth? Who knows.

Marco and Marty guest comic
This is my guest comic (2/22 in the Daily Illini) for the highly-recommended Marco and Marty by Billy Fore (who was also kind enough to give me the final kick I needed in order to stake out my own tiny space in the artblogosphere).
Tah-dah! 1/1634086th of a dream come true...a comic strip published for one day in a college newspaper. :]
What I did today (AKA "Placeholder" First Post)
Because it was for a TOP SECRET roundtable conference, I cannot reveal the full deliverable of my first success with InDesign yaay. So the Snoopy drawing (not actually out of context -- long story) that I did for the poster will have to stand alone. Bonus points if you know what it is that he is drafting.
